How is it flowing? The story of FlowFlow

Written by Roman on July 16, 2026

Back in 2017 I started FlowFlow as one of my first pet projects, and it has been quietly evolving ever since. The idea behind it - bring the information about all Swiss waters easily accessible to the public, for free. This year, thanks to AI tooling, I could finally give it the frontend it deserves and release it under flowflow.planet10.ch.

FlowFlow showing live data of Swiss water stations

What you can do with it

FlowFlow shows all water monitoring stations in Switzerland in one place — water temperature, discharge, and water levels for rivers and lakes across the country. You can search for a station, browse them on a map, or just check whether your river is warm enough for a swim. No accounts, no ads, easily accessible on your phone.

How it's done

All measurements come from official Swiss sources such as BAFU/FOEN hydrodata and MeteoSwiss — FlowFlow simply gathers them in one place and makes them pleasant to look at. Under the hood it's a Ruby on Rails app, self-hosted, importing fresh data every ten minutes.

Feedback welcome

FlowFlow is free for everyone. Have a look at flowflow.planet10.ch — I'm happy to hear your feedback via our contact page.
