Digital exhibition of Switzerlands colonial history

Switzerland had no colonies of its own, yet Swiss men, women, and children were involved in the colonial project. They were shaped by and helped shape colonialism—both consciously and unconsciously.

Using Fribourg as an example, we show how Swiss people influenced the colonial world and how colonial connections, in turn, changed local histories. We trace the paths of colonists, missionaries, and scientists, and examine the ideas and mindsets that took hold among consumers, politicians, and newspaper readers in Fribourg.

colonial-local.ch tells colonial stories through historical images, photographs, and texts. These provoke questions and encourage reflection on ourselves, our past, and our present. They reveal previously unspoken and forgotten aspects, showing how colonialism has shaped and continues to shape our coexistence, thinking, and memory. It's clear: colonialism is not just part of history; it still affects our lives today.
